A call for child passenger safety

Dr. Michelle Macy, a 2013 CHRT Policy Fellow, wrote an opinion piece in the Detroit News which argues that Michigan's Child Passenger Safety Law has not kept pace with recent research and recommendations from the American Academy of Pediatrics. Dr. Macy states that we should require rear-facing car seat use beyond 1 year —and booster seat use until the until the vehicle seat belt fits properly, which is usually is when a child is, on average, 11 years old. She urges the legislature to consider updating the law, noting that child safety should be a bi-partisan issue.

In a new column, Commonwealth Fund president Karen Davis and research associate Kristof Stremikis look at how our provider payment system leads to costly and potentially dangerous readmissions, and how a "global fee" covering a bundle of hospital and post-hospital services has great potential to improve care, reduce complications, and generate savings to finance health reform. The authors point out that President Obama, The Commonwealth Fund Commission on a High Performance Health System, and U.S. Senate Finance Committee chair Max Baucus all recommend bundling hospital payments for inpatient care, as well as post-acute health services following hospitalization, as a way to realign financial incentives to encourage greater care coordination.
